Lentils with Carrots & Rice


  • 2 cups of water
  • 3/4 cup of red split lentils
  • 1/2 cup peeled and diced carrots
  • 1/4 cup brown rice or basmati rice
  • Optional – ½ teaspoon of mild curry paste or a pinch of mild curry powder


Step 1: Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring mixture to a boil and then simmer for approximately 20 minutes.

Step 2: Check on the level of the water and add water as needed. The mix will be finished when the rice is done, the carrots are soft and the lentils have “melted”. This can then be mashed or blended to the appropriate texture for your child.

For Family version:

To the ingredients, for 2 adults it would be worth doubling the quantity of the ingredients. To add extra flavour you can add fried onion, garlic and chillies to your serving. Also if cooking for a family it would be sensible to cook the rice separately or even serve with flat bread.
